Some memories were good. I remember making clay animals, catching lizards in the field, playing tag under streetlights. These moments shaped my creativity and love for learning.
But darker memories returned too. I remembered nights when someone came unwelcome into my bed. That message told me I was not safe, even at home.
I was criticized for every mistake, even things I was never taught. That message told me to never let my guard down.
I loved to sing, but I was told to “stop that noise.” That message told me my voice was a bother.
I was often called ugly, stupid, and useless. Though said as jokes, I grew to believe them.
I was intelligent but felt stupid. Talented but felt incapable. Gifted but felt worthless.
